The Barkhor Community Center in Lhasa, Tibet, is one of the few places where unemployed individuals without families or other means of support can find help in dealing with the basic challenges of daily survival. Most of the people who use the center are seniors, either single or separated from their families. Some are former monks and nuns without monastic support.
The Nyerongsha Institute currently provides financial assistance to the Community Center, which in turn helps arrange for needy individuals to obtain important daily services. These range from housecleaning and assistance with errands to getting rides to medical appointments.
The Community Center has many long-term goals, and would like to expand their services to include low-cost group housing, food services and other significant improvements to the standard of living among the poorer people in the city.
