As the resident traditional physician for The Nyerongsha Institute for Tibetan Medicine and Culture, Dr. Nyerongsha provides services to a broad range of patients in the classical Tibetan healing (sorig) tradition. She represents the seventh generation in a renowned family of Tibetan physicians, following in the footsteps of her late mother, Dr. Tenley Palden Nyerongsha, and many uncles.
Dr. Nyerongsha's grandfather, Dr. Ringzen Nyerongsha, was a great teacher of the Chagpori medical lineage. Dr. Ringzen Nyerongsha's teacher was Dr. Taykhang Jhampa Thubwang, who was private physician to the 13th Dalai Lama. During this period, Dr. Nyerongsha himself acted as assistant physician to the Dalai Lama. One of Dr. Ringzen Nyerongsha's most well-known students was the late medical lama Dr. Trogawa Rinpoche. Dr. Dickey Nyerongsha's brother, Dr. Tsedor Nyerongsha, is currently the director of the Nyerongsha Medical Clinic in Lhasa.
Dr. Dickey Nyerongsha began her studies of Tibetan medicine at the age of eight, studying with her grandfather and other family members over the years, and then graduating from the University of Tibet Medical School. She also studied with Dr. Trogawa Rinpoche, the late Dr. Tenzin Choedrak (senior physician to the 14th Dalai Lama), her late uncle Dr. Kunga Nyerongsha (junior assistant to the 14th Dalai Lama) and Dr. Yeshi Donden (who has also been personal physician to the 14th Dalai Lama). In addition, she has assisted these physicians during their visits to the United States, serving at times as host, translator, herbal consultant, assisting physician and personal aide. Dr. Nyerongsha has had a flourishing practice in the United States for the past 20 years.
