Medical Scholarships

The Nyerongsha Institute recognizes that many qualified and deserving Tibetan students fail to achieve higher levels of education in valuable fields of study due solely to financial hardship. This can have significant consequences for the Tibetan population as a whole, especially in the field of medicine, where a lack of sufficient medical personnel can directly impact the state of healthcare throughout local communities. 
The Nyerongsha Institute also takes an interest in the vitality and future availability of traditional Tibetan medical arts, and maintains a long-range commitment to projects that will help traditional Tibetan medicine to flourish. This includes supporting the continued use of traditional Tibetan medical theory and practices as well as helping to preserve the rich body of pharmacological knowledge relating to proven herbal preparations and treatments.​
With these goals in mind, The Nyerongsha Institute has made medical scholarships available so that local villages and towns—which desperately need doctors but cannot afford to send their children to medical school—can begin to have access to trained physicians. These scholarships focus primarily on outlying areas with the highest degree of need.​

​As a result of this project, many talented young people now have the ability to attend the Tibetan Medical Institute in Lhasa and complete the many years of required study. The scholarships support 22 medical students every year. Many of the classes have already graduated, sending qualified traditional Tibetan physicians back into rural communities to benefit the local populations.
